Just what type of exercise is right?

Cardio – Everyone talks about the importance of cardio, and for good reason. A healthy heart will provide many more years of service than one that's been ignored. In a study at the Harvard School of Public Health, exercise was directly linked to coronary heart disease. The risk for individuals shot up astronomically the lower on the exercise scale they were. And those who did at least 30 minutes of cardio vascular exercise daily showed nearly no risk.

Resistance Training – The heart isn't the entire picture. The loss of ability to physically function is a direct result of muscle atrophy. In order to offset this, some form of resistance training, which usually means weight training, must be done. While the benefits of getting enough cardio are more obvious, because death is the downside, the more subtle changes gained from consistent resistance work are much more numerous and every bit as important for aging gracefully. Nearly every Activity requires muscle tone. Plus, a strong musculature helps protect the rest of the body as well: joints, tendons, bones and organs.

Flexibility Training – As we age, our muscles shrink and tend to spend more time contracted--perhaps trying to fight the aging process on a neuromuscular level. Range of motion and flexibility training will keep muscles more supple, which will allow easier movement in general and help one stay physically active. A supple body gets injured less because it can "bend" in order to accommodate accidental movements that happen to most people on a daily basis.
